Webb is putting all his energy into the 2009 regular season. "While I am excited for Team USA and the [Classic], I am not going to participate in 2009 because I want to fully prepare for the 2009 Major League season," Webb said in the statement. "We came up just short of the playoffs last year, and my focus and efforts are in seeing that we bring the playoffs back to Arizona." The 29-year-old was 22-7 last season with a 3.30 ERA, finishing second in the National League Cy Young Award voting.

MLB.com reports that starter Brandon Webb would decline an invitation to play in the World Baseball Classic.Webb, who won 22 games last season with Arizona, will likely get an invitation. Players who opt out of the competition will be able to undergo their common preparations for the regular season.

Accoring to managing general partner Ken Kendrick, the Diamondbacks' payroll will likely increase north of $75 million for 2010. General manager Josh Byrnes began the offseason with roughly $20 million to spend, but after picking up the $8.5 million option for Brandon Webb, the club will have less room to work with. "We definitely have more than $10 million to spend in the market," Kendrick said. "There are other moves that we may make that could change the money landscape that have yet to be determined." Of course, their flexibility may change depending on whether they will be able to find a taker for Chris Snyder or Eric Byrnes, but the Diamondbacks are expected to look for a No. 4 starter, a set-up man and a veteran position player. Arizona's payroll was approximately $73 million in 2009.
