Diamondbacks | Webb to miss at least six weeks
Updating previous reports, Jesse Sanchez, of MLB.com, reports Arizona Diamondbacks SP Brandon Webb (shoulder) has a strained teres major muscle in the back of his right shoulder and will not pitch in a big league game for at least six weeks. "Obviously, I'm not real happy and it's not what we wanted to hear," Webb said. "Dr. Lee said it was a three-to-six-week deal whenever you strain your shoulder. We went on the three-week side of it first and now we are going to go with the six-week side of it." Webb conceded that it's going to take time for him to build up his pitch count and arm strength, but added that his shoulder feels as strong as it has ever felt. He said his injury was described to him as "a hamstring pull or strain in your arm." Webb said he first noticed the shoulder stiffness during his final start of Spring Training. "I just think I did something in Spring Training that caused it," Webb said. "The wear and tear on the scan looks really good, so that's encouraging."
The right-hander experienced tightness in his right shoulder
The right-hander experienced tightness in his right shoulder playing catch before a scheduled bullpen session on Friday and was examined by the team doctor later that afternoon. Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit, who is 0-1 with 6.00 ERA in three appearances/two starts, will stay in Webb's place in the rotation.

Webb will take one week off from throwing, according to manager Bob Melvin, followed by two weeks of shoulder strengthening. "Hopefully, this will take care of it," Melvin said. "I think they've done all [the tests] you can do. Maybe they come up with something in the meantime, but that's all I know as of right now."

News: Arizona Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb will be shut down for three weeks in a significant setback to his attempt to recover from shoulder problems that have sidelined him since his opening-day start. Manager Bob Melvin announced the decision after the Diamondbacks lost to San Francisco 5-1 on Friday night. "He won't do anything for a week and then he'll do some strengthening for two weeks, no throwing," Melvin said, "and then we'll see where we are after that." Webb's bullpen session was canceled Friday when the right-hander felt tightness in the shoulder while playing catch. It was supposed to be his second bullpen workout. He felt fine after his first, 33-pitch session on Tuesday. The plan had been for Webb to throw to hitters if Friday's bullpen went well, then perhaps have him make a minor league start. An MRI showed a small amount of fluid in the shoulder but no structural damage. Webb went on the 15-day disabled list April 13, retroactive to April 7. Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit -- 0-1, 6.00 ERA in three appearances, two starts -- will continue to take Webb's place in the rotation. [...]

"It's obviously a little confusing because he felt good the last time out," Melvin said before the Diamondbacks hosted the San Francisco Giants. "I was a little apprehensive letting it go off the bat," Webb said. "But as soon as I started throwing, I was like this feels totally different than what it did so I knew then that it was going to feel good." So good, in fact that Webb asked head athletic trainer Ken Crenshaw if he could extend the session a bit. One thing that is certain is that Webb will not pitch April 21. Instead, Yusmeiro Petit will get the starting nod.

Don't despair over Webb yetFrom ESPN.com's Christopher Harris: "I'm betting the biggest beef I get from readers this week is not dropping Webb lower in my pitcher rankings. I pushed him down only three spots despite his trip to the disabled list. The Diamondbacks seem to believe he'll miss only one more start, and he got a clean bill of health, shoulder-structure-wise, from both his team doctors and Dr. James Andrews. Webb is calling the injury bursitis, which should go away with some rest. He has had the condition before. He has missed starts before. I'm still betting he'll be fine."Sixty Feet, Six InchesTue, Apr 14 [...]

There's hope for Webb missing the minimumTaking every precaution with their ace right-hander, the Diamondbacks placed Webb on the 15-day DL Sunday with tightness in his pitching shoulder. The move was made retroactive to this past Tuesday, meaning Webb can return to action as early as April 22. Judging by Webb's comments, chances are he might be back in that minimum amount of time: "There's no concern," he told the Associated Press. "The MRIs are all good. I mean, if there's no structural damage, there's nothing to worry about." Judging by Webb's performance, though, that sentiment might be met with more skepticism. He hasn't pitched well (in spring or in the regular season), and he also dealt with some forearm tightness during spring training. We'll have more on Webb's health as the week progresses, but for now, expect him to sit out until at least the middle of next week, perhaps a few days longer. -- Tristan H. Diamondbacks | Webb meets with Dr. Andrews
Diamondbacks.MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports Arizona Diamondbacks SP Brandon Webb (shoulder) met with Dr. James Andrews, who told Webb that as long as he continues his strengthening program he was at no greater risk than any other pitcher of developing a shoulder problem.
Webb saw Dr. James Andrews in December
It has just recently come to light that Brandon Webb saw top-of-the-line orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews to have his arm examined in December, according to MLB.com.
Our View: Apparently Dr. Andrews didn't find anything out of the ordinary with Webb's arm, telling the pitcher it was just typical tendinitis and bursitis that he was suffering from, though this is just another tidbit to add on to several other worrying reports regarding Webb's health over the past few days. While Webb will miss his next start, a decision regarding a possible placement on the DL has yet to be made. It's by no means time to deal Webb for 50 cents on the dollar, but we can't say that there isn't at least some real cause for concern with Webb at this point.

Webb spoke with Andrews about his sore right shoulder, and Andrews emphasized that Webb continuing his strengthening program would ensure good future health. It's typically bad news for a pitcher when he has to meet with Andrews, but Webb expressed optimism with his case. He explained his shoulder stiffness is more muscle-related than joint-related. "They [D-backs medical team] tested the strength of my shoulder this week, and it tested out stronger than it's ever been. I really don't feel like this is a big deal." Unless more news is reported, assume Webb should be as strong a start as ever when he next toes the rubber.
Webb's health prevented extension
Concerns raised by insurance companies over Brandon Webb's arm caused the Diamondbacks to pull their offer of a three-year, $54MM contract extension last June, according to FOX Sports. Webb passed a team physical, but insurance companies use a higher standard when assessing risk. Multiple companies raised concerns, forming a "red flag" for the Diamondbacks. The extension was contingent on Arizona securing an appropriate insurance policy for the pitcher.
Our View: His health became an issue yesterday, when the team indicated that Webb will miss his scheduled start for Saturday due to right shoulder stiffness. The extent of his ailment is yet to be determined. He will not throw for two days, and a decision has not been made if he will need to go on the DL.

Webb uncharacteristically lasted just four innings Monday against the Rockies, allowing six runs on six hits. His velocity was noticeably down as the game went along. Tuesday, Webb played catch and said afterward that he was fine and saw no reason why he would not be able to make his next scheduled start April 11 against the Dodgers. "Nope," Webb said when asked if he had any stiffness during his throwing session. "It's great."

The Associated Press reports Arizona Diamondbacks SP Brandon Webb was rocked for six runs and six hits in four innings Monday, April 6, in a 9-8 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb was rocked for six runs and six
News: Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb was rocked for six runs and six hits in four innings Monday in the season opener against the Rockies. He issued two walks and recorded two strikeouts, taking the no-decision. Webb said he was dropping his arm too low and was bothered by stiffness in his shoulder early in the fourth inning, when he gave up consecutive homers on three pitches to Troy Tulowitzki and Chris Iannetta. He said he felt fine after the game, though. According to MLB.com, the altered arm angle caused his velocity to drop and his trademark sinker to fall flat -- the exact same thing that happened to him during a June slump last year. "I mean, it's similar," Webb said. "Pitchers go through times when you try to find the right spot and you try different things. You just have to kind of work through it until one day you find it, it clicks and you're able to repeat it." [...]

The stiffness, Webb said, limited his effectiveness in the fourth inning, which began with Troy Tulowitzki and Chris Iannetta hitting back-to-back homers on Webb's first three pitches. An inning earlier, Webb walked the bases loaded with two out and allowed Brad Hawpe's bases-clearing double. Webb was lifted by Arizona manager Bob Melvin after the fourth inning. Last year, Webb battled through an early bout with right shoulder tendinitis and needed four starts from Aug. 26 to Sept. 12 to notch his 20th victory, so the injury isn't unprecedented. Stay tuned.

It’s Opening Day - one of our favorite days of the year at Fantasy Baseball Dugout! Webb surrenders six runs in four innings
Brandon Webb had a poor start to 2009 as he lasted just four innings in Arizona's 9-8 win over the Rockies. He allowed six hits, two walks, and six earned runs while striking out two hitters.
Our View: Webb has logged a ton of innings on his right arm over the past few seasons, and there's a chance that could finally catch up to him this season. He finished last season poorly and continued with a rocky spring training. While generally viewed as one of the most reliable pitchers in baseball, he failed the faithful today.
Rockies | Stewart starts at second in place of Barmes
Updating previous reports, Patrick Saunders, of The Denver Post, reports Colorado Rockies 3B Ian Stewart started at second base Monday, April 6, in place of 2B Clint Barmes because the team was looking for maximum firepower and wanted to get another left-handed bat in their lineup against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Brandon Webb.

Brandon Webb said he doesn't believe Manny Ramirez can duplicate the red-hot hitting he gave the Dodgers in 2009. "He's a great hitter, but having to worry about slowing that guy down? I don't think he's going to be doing the same thing he did last year, to be honest with you," Webb said Saturday. [...]

Status: Out. Probable for Opening Day
Accoring to managing general partner Ken Kendrick, the Diamondbacks' payroll will likely increase north of $75 million for 2010. General manager Josh Byrnes began the offseason with roughly $20 million to spend, but after picking up the $8.5 million option for Brandon Webb, the club will have less room to work with. "We definitely have more than $10 million to spend in the market," Kendrick said. "There are other moves that we may make that could change the money landscape that have yet to be determined." Of course, their flexibility may change depending on whether they will be able to find a taker for Chris Snyder or Eric Byrnes, but the Diamondbacks are expected to look for a No. 4 starter, a set-up man and a veteran position player. Arizona's payroll was approximately $73 million in 2009.
