Penny and the Boston Red Sox reached a preliminary agreement on a $5 million, one-year contract, according to several reports Monday. A two-time All-Star, the 30-year-old Penny struggled with injuries to his shoulder and side last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, going 6-9 with a 6.27 ERA in 17 starts and two relief appearances. The previous season, however, Penny went 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 33 starts covering 208 innings and placed third in NL Cy Young Award voting.

Barring an unforeseen setback, Penny looks certain to land with Boston, as he made clear Sunday night in an interview on WEEI.com. "There were a lot of teams involved," Penny said, "But I wanted to go somewhere where I knew we had a great chance at winning and Boston is that place." The 30-year-old righty is coming off an injury-riddled '08 campaign, as nagging shoulder issues limited him to just 17 starts (6-9, 6.27 ERA). That said, Penny is just two years removed from back-to-back 16-win seasons, and will certainly benefit from solid run support with one of baseball's deepest lineups behind him.
