A heartbreaking outing for Penny, who handed a one-run lead to Brian Wilson, only to watch the closer surrender two earned runs in the ninth as the Giants lost 3-2. All wasn't lost for Penny, however, with the big righty improving his ERA to 3.31 over five outings since being acquired in August. What's striking is that in four of those starts, Penny held the opposition to two earned runs or fewer while lasting seven-plus frames. Bank on continued success next time out against the middling Diamondbacks offense.

Our View: Martin's line this season (.258/6/48) looks extremely bad for a franchise player. Especially when compared to what he did in 2007 (.293/19/87), which is what he's capable of. He's trended down the last two seasons now.

One way in which he's helped himself is by inducing 23 groundouts -- 13 on Sept. 2 and 10 on Monday. He had forced 10-plus groundouts just once in 24 starts with the Red Sox, so his ability to continue to keep the ball on the ground could make for another great outing on Sept. 13 at home against the Dodgers.

Our View: Penny allowed just five hits and a walk in the contest and fanned a pair of Phillies. Looks like the thought that a transition back to the NL would help him was right on. Still, it's hard not to improve on the 7-8 record and 5.61 ERA he had in Boston.
