The Los Angeles Times' Dylan Hernandez reports Los Angeles Dodgers SP Brad Penny (shoulder) cleared out his locker Thursday, Sept. 25. Penny, who has a $9.25 million option for next season that could be bought out for $2 million, said this month that he was disappointed that the Dodgers refused to extend his contract this spring. Trainer Stan Conte said that as far as he knew, Penny would remain under his watch as he rehabilitated his ailing shoulder over the next six weeks.

"He was here yesterday and he disappeared. I didn't ask him to leave."Apparently Penny thinks that being placed on the 60-day DL means you have been released from the club. This is yet another classless act by a guy who has been dogged by his own ego and selfishness for most of his career. It certainly won't lead to the team exercising their $9.25 million option on him next season.

Penny, the club's Opening Day starter, has spent two stints on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis and bursitis, limiting him to two starts since June 14 and just one victory since May 2. He began the season 5-2 with a 3.19 ERA, but followed that with a seven-game losing streak. Overall, Penny is 6-9 with a 6.05 ERA. Penny's return will provide some immediate relief with the continued absence of southpaw Hong-Chih Kuo, who has been unavailable through this series because of a fatigued left arm. Penny said after making 75 throws Tuesday that he has enough arm strength to return to the starting rotation if need be.
