Our View: Penny was hindered by shoulder fatique earlier in spring training, but felt great in his first start last Monday when he worked three innings. Either Penny or Clay Buchholz will be the No. 5 starter. Justin Masterson will hold a role in the bullpen.

He feels like he is ready to pitch for the first week of the regular season and he said, "Yeah, I think I am. I mean, I feel like it, so, that is not my decision, so I am going to listen to their program and go along with them."
Our View: This is encouraging news, regarding the possibility that his weak shoulder will be strong enough when it is his turn to pitch in the rotation, around April 10 or 11. He will next pitch against the Tigers on March 23, and he will namely need to build his pitch count up.

After Penny felt some fatigue in his shoulder two days, cutting a batting-practice session to 25 pitches, the Red Sox re-evaluated his program. Clay Buchholz, already scheduled to piggyback Penny on Thursday, will now start that game. Manager Terry Francona said that it's too early to tell if Penny will start the regular season on the active roster, nor did he think that was particularly crucial. "What we're really trying to do is get him healthy so he can go out and pitch like he can pitch," Francona said.

News: Red Sox pitcher Brad Penny was scratched from his first scheduled spring training start because of shoulder weakness. Penny was to have started Thursday against Puerto Rico. He stopped a bullpen session Sunday after 25 pitches. "I don't think the shoulder strength was quite where it needed to be yet for the work load I was doing," Penny said. "It's better to take it easy right now than to get out there in the first week of April and have it flare up on me." Penny was limited to 19 games with the Dodgers last year, and just nine innings after June 14, because of the shoulder problems. "He could pitch Thursday. I just don't know it's in everybody's long-term best interests," manager Terry Francona said Tuesday. "I think the best way I can put it is that he's still putting gas in the tank. Brad Penny has been pushed back, according to MLB.com. Penny felt some fatigue in his shoulder on Sunday, and will no longer pitch Thursday against Team Puerto Rico. He will throw off flat ground and focus on strengthening his shoulder for the time being.Penny stated that the current fatigue in his shoulder is not close to the the pain that limited him to only 94.2 innings in 2008. Justin Masterson, Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden are all capable of filling his spot in the rotation if Penny is not ready to go at the start of the season.
