Ryan Madson blew his second save of the season on Tuesday night, and his first since taking over for the injured Brad Lidge, walking two and surrendering a run in the ninth inning against the Blue Jays. The Jays would go on to win 8-3 in 10 innings.
Our View: Madson has been lights out in 2009, posting a 2.16 ERA while striking out 37 and walking just 11. Tuesday night is likely nothing more than a bump in the road. He is an excellent option at closer while Lidge is out, and a very solid middle relief option in leagues with holds.

Our View: No announcement has been officially made, but it would appear as if Madson will get most, if not all, the Phillies' save opportunities while Lidge is gone. NL-only managers should pick him up for sure, and mixed league managers in need of saves should give him a look as well.

Lidge placed on 15-day DL
The official Twitter page of the Phillies is reporting that closer Brad Lidge has been placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained right knee. Lidge has blown six saves this season, and there has been rampant speculation that his knee has been bothering him all year.
Our View: This comes as a bit of a surprise, but it was obvious Lidge was not at 100 percent. Hopefully a few weeks off will allow the knee to fully heal, but fantasy owners need to find another option quick at closer. Don't expect him to be out for much more than the 15 days unless he has a setback.

One season after going 41-for-41 in save opportunities and delivering a 1.95 ERA, Lidge has already blown six saves while ringing up a 7.27 ERA. He looked to be settling down at the end of May, but his problems resurfaced, leading to blown saves on June 5 and 6. At his point, it's unclear if Lidge's knee problems will keep him out for longer than the alotted 15 days, but owners will nonetheless want to grab likely fill-in closer Ryan Madson while they can.

Ethier, who had a game-ending two-run double off Lidge in the ninth inning of Friday night's 4-3 win, sent a full-count offering from Chad Durbin (1-2) over the center-field fence to complete his fourth career multihomer game. Phillies closer Brad Lidge, who had seemingly righted the ship
News: Phillies closer Brad Lidge, who had seemingly righted the ship with saves in each of his last five appearances -- allowing one hit and one walk during that stretch -- had another meltdown Friday at the Dodgers. He blew his fifth save of the season and suffered his third defeat, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning. [...]
Lidge believes knee is not a problem
The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that the knee of closer Brad Lidge is not an issue anymore. "It feels like I don't really have to worry about it as much anymore. I don't have to worry if it's going to respond. It's stronger, and I am confident that it will." Lidge recorded a save in four straight days from May 29 to June 1.
Our View: Lidge has been much better as of late, so it seems like his knee injury may be a thing of the past. He has been pitching on consecutive days on a regular basis, so fantasy owners can expect to see the Brad Lidge of old going forward. Be weary of an injury recurrence, but for now it appears that Lidge is completely healthy.

Hoffman earns 14th save
Trevor Hoffman remained perfect on the season as he picked up his 14th save in 14 chances in the Brewers 9-6 win over the Marlins on Wednesday. He did not allow a base runner, while striking out one.
Our View: Hoffman has yet to allow a run in 16 innings of work this season, which is obviously impressive. What we find almost as impressive is his 15:1 K:BB ratio. It may seem impossible for him to keep this up all season, but Brad Lidge was able to remain perfect on all of his save opportunities just a season ago.
Phillies closer Brad Lidge continues to re-prove his dominance

Yes, his recent hot streak has come against some below-average
Yes, his recent hot streak has come against some below-average teams, but it's hard to argue with the fact that Lidge has now saved five games in the last week. For Lidge, as for other closers, a bulletproof mentality is essential to getting this most stressful of jobs done. If Lidge's recent spate of saves gets him back into a groove, it won't matter whether those saves came against the Marlins, Nats and Padres. Fantasy owners already don't care about the team Lidge is shutting down in the ninth, as long as he's doing it consistently. Right now, he is.
Lidge back on track
The Philadelphia Enquirer is reporting that Brad Lidge is back on track after converting his last three save chances. "I feel really good right now," said Lidge. "My command has come back, and my stuff has come back. Even when I wasn't going good, I felt like this was going to happen. It just took longer than I hoped it would."
Our View: Lidge appears to be back, much to the delight of his fantasy owners. His stuff is there, so keep him in the fantasy lineup. If for any reason he is available in your league, now would be a good time to pounce.
