Scott Lauber, of The Delaware News Journal, reports Philadelphia Phillies RP Ryan Madson is confident that he will be able to handle the closing duties with RP Brad Lidge (knee) on the shelf. Madson's fastball has jumped to 97 mph since late last season. He has given up eight hits and struck out 15 in 10 innings so far this season. "I think he's got the potential to be [a closer]," pitching coach Rich Dubee said. "He always has had the ability and the stuff. But I think he has a better understanding of his ability. He's got power, and he's got separation to where he changes speeds. His growth, the last month of last year, allowed his confidence to explode, and he's become a different beast."

"With the uncertainty about Brad Lidge, and we don't have [the still-suspended] J.C. [Romero], and if we wind up having to use [Ryan] Madson to close without Lidge, we could use a guy like that."
