Janie McCauley, of The Associated Press, reports San Francisco Giants SP Barry Zito allowed four runs on six hits in four innings Saturday, Sept. 26, to suffer his 13th loss of the season. He struck out three batters and walked five in the game.

Even though Zito has looked more and more like a respectable starting option since the All-Star break, he's still susceptible to the occasional relapse. Saturday represented the third time in seven outings that Zito issued five-plus walks. Still, he has a 2.92 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP in 14 outings in the second half, so the lefty should get a spot start on Oct. 2 against the Padres at pitcher-friendly PETCO Park.

Our View: Zito was brilliant against the Rockies on September 15th, but has laid an egg in his past two starts. He's given up eight runs and eight walks in his last 8.1 innings.

X-rays on Barry Zito's left elbow Friday revealed no structural damage. Zito was struck on his pitching elbow Friday night with an Adrian Gonzalez line drive, but simply suffered a bruise. And now he has the entire offseason to recover. The left-hander went 10-13 with a 4.03 ERA over 33 starts in '09.
