San Francisco Giants SP Barry Zito allowed one run on eight hits over 8 1/3 innings Saturday, Aug. 29, against the Colorado Rockies, according to The Associated Press. He walked one and struck out seven, improving to 9-11 on the season. Zito carried a shutout into the ninth inning, and improved to 4-2 with a 1.77 ERA since the All-Star break.

Zito's performances of late have been staggering. A ninth inning solo home run by Brad Hawpe on Saturday was the first earned run scored against Zito in 21 1/3 innings, dating all the way back to his Aug. 14 appearance vs. the Mets. It's amazing what Zito can do when he gets his control under wraps and starts missing bats. He's moved beyond spot start status and should be picked up for his Sept. 4 outing against the Brewers at Miller Park.

Brad Hawpe's ninth inning solo home run broke up Barry Zito's shutout bid, but did little else, as the Rockies lost 5-3 in San Francisco for their fourth straight loss.
Our View: Hawpe has very quietly put together a solid season in 2009, batting .299 with 19 home runs and 76 RBI.

Barry Zito pitched 8.1 dynamite innings of one-run ball for the Giants on Saturday night, helping them to a 5-3 win, and bringing them to just one game behind Colorado for the National League wild card.
Our View: The oft-maligned Zito has actually been one of the best pitchers in baseball since the All-Star break this season, going 4-2 with a 1.56 ERA in nine starts. His full season ERA now rests at 3.94.

X-rays on Barry Zito's left elbow Friday revealed no structural damage. Zito was struck on his pitching elbow Friday night with an Adrian Gonzalez line drive, but simply suffered a bruise. And now he has the entire offseason to recover. The left-hander went 10-13 with a 4.03 ERA over 33 starts in '09.
