Our View: Zito was good again tonight, and he also limited the walks to two in this outing. He is starting to look like a guy who could help out a fantasy rotation, but proceed with caution as it is still Barry Zito.

Barry Zito had a surprisingly dominant start on Thursday. He held the Braves to just one run on three hits over seven innings. He fanned six and earned the win, but his only blemish was the five free passes he handed out.

Our View: Zito is now 6-10 and since rumors started that he was going to be bumped from the rotation or possibly even released, he's pitched very well. The five walks on Thursday were a step back, but just three runs allowed in his last 13.1 innings is nothing to shake a stick at when you're talking about Barry Zito.

Hard to blame Barry for this one, as this was actually a pretty solid all-around effort. Zito has been alternating solid starts with implosions in his four July starts -- he allowed nine earned in his previous turn, and fired 8 1/3 shutout efforts in the start before that -- which doesn't bode terribly well for his July 23 start in Atlanta. But while Zito is 5-10 with an underwhelming 4.89 ERA, his peripherals were good enough over the first half to make him useful in NL-only leagues again.

Barry Zito was embarrassed by a light-hitting Padre lineup on Sunday. He allowed nine runs on ten hits over just 4.1 innings. The Giants fell10-4 and Zito dropped to 5-9 on the season.

Our View: Zito looked like the pitcher of old earlier this season, but the wheels have recently come off. After a 3.35 ERA for the month of May he posted a 5.81 mark on June and is currently suffering through a 7.41 ERA this month. It might be time to send him to the bench.

The Padres finished with a season-high 10 runs, the last major league team to reach double digits in scoring this season. Kevin Kouzmanoff and Eliezer Alfonzo homered off Zito, who was tagged with his team-leading ninth loss of the season. The Padres, who were held without a hit by San Francisco lefty Jonathan Sanchez on Friday, broke out of their offensive slump early against Zito. Analysis: A dominant showing from Zito, who responded well after getting touched for five earned runs by the Cardinals last time out. He was nasty in this one, effectively mixing his pitches and not allowing any extra base hits. It�s been an up and down campaign, though, as he�s given up at least five earned runs on four occasions. For that reason it�s vital to look at the lineup he�s facing every time out before deciding whether or not to give him the nod. The veteran southpaw is on track to toe the rubber on July 12 vs. a San Diego team he�s compiled a 2.84 ERA against in three starts this season.

Our View: Zito is definitely not the same pitcher he was in 2007 and 2008, but also isn't back at the high level he pitched at during his A's years. He is usually a strong second-half pitcher, however, and is definitely worth a flier if you are in need of pitching help.

X-rays on Barry Zito's left elbow Friday revealed no structural damage. Zito was struck on his pitching elbow Friday night with an Adrian Gonzalez line drive, but simply suffered a bruise. And now he has the entire offseason to recover. The left-hander went 10-13 with a 4.03 ERA over 33 starts in '09.
