According to The Sports Xchange notes: Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti is not counting on Barry Zito regaining the fastball he had in years past. Zito's hardest stuff is in the mid-80 mph range, sometimes low 80s. No longer in the high 80s. "No," Righetti said when asked if Zito can get his velocity back, "unless he has an operation, unless he does a Rod Beck and puts on 20 or 30 pounds and throws harder. But how can you throw harder? I've never seen it other than somebody getting hurt and getting a new arm." That means Zito has to re-invent himself and become a pitcher who succeeds by locating, not throwing a fastball past anyone. "I think he can win with the stuff he's got," Righetti said. "He's got to make adjustments." [...]

X-rays on Barry Zito's left elbow Friday revealed no structural damage. Zito was struck on his pitching elbow Friday night with an Adrian Gonzalez line drive, but simply suffered a bruise. And now he has the entire offseason to recover. The left-hander went 10-13 with a 4.03 ERA over 33 starts in '09.
