Nitkowski, currently pitching in the Korean League, was interviewed nearly two weeks ago by federal agents to determine if free-agent SP Roger Clemens was committing perjury after he denied using performance-enhancing drugs, according to The Associated Press. Nitkowski never played with Clemens, but worked out alongside him and New York Yankees SP Andy Pettitte, as well as Brian McNamee, at Clemens' home in Houston. He said he willingly answered all of the FBI's questions, but claimed he didn't have much to offer because he had never seen either player use performance-enhancing drugs.

Pettitte can make an additional $6.5 million on performance bonuses and bonuses based on time on the active roster. "There was never another team brought up," Pettitte said. "I wanted to come back to the Yankees." He joins a starting rotation that already includes CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain. The deal raised the Yankees' projected opening-day payroll to $196.8 million for 17 players with agreements. Late last year, New York had offered a deal that would have guaranteed Pettitte $10 million, down from the $16 million he earned last year. The report states that the Astros are working with a firm payroll number ($100 million) and aren't likely to increase that figure. "We haven't had any discussion with Andy or his representatives and we don't see a scenario where he would fit into our payroll scenario at this time," GM Ed Wade said.If the Astros don't have the money for Ty Wigginton or Randy Wolf, it would seem a bit odd if they certainly found the millions needed to bring in Pettitte.
