Forget mid-May. Alex Rodriguez is showing signs that he is going to return to the Yankees well before that.

Hitting coach Kevin Long, who speaks daily with A-Rod, told The Post that Rodriguez has begun to hit and reported that he "feels 70 percent."

A Yankee official told The Post that he thought the rehab was going so well, in fact, that if the organization wanted to it could have Rodriguez back on a major league field by late April.

Rodriguez remains in Colorado Springs rehabilitating from hip surgery. The plan is for him to head to the Yankees' minor league complex in Tampa within the next 10 days to further step up his recovery program.

3 Up: A-rod's Speedy Return, And What It Means

1. George King and I wrote that there is growing belief in the organization that Alex Rodriguez is progressing so well from his hip surgery that he could be back by late April if the Yanks wanted to push his rehab. The question is if they want to push his rehab. With the Red Sox, for example, their front office believes that John Smoltz looked so good all spring that if it was the goal of the organization, Boston could have had him ready to be part of the season-opening rotation. Instead, the Red Sox stayed committed to their big-picture goal of not rushing Smoltz and targeting June 1 with the idea being that gives him a greater chance to be part of the stretch run (and potentially playoffs).

GM Brian Cashman has set a target date for his return at May 15, but A-Rod feels he may be able to return before then.

Our View: Initial reports suggested that the AL MVP could be ready by mid-April, but it looks as if that will not be the case. The third baseman is just one year removed from a season that saw him hit 54 home runs, to go with 156 RBI and 143 runs scored. While that type of production cannot be expected in 2008, he may still be able to match his 2008 totals when he played just 138 games.
