Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik sounds like an executive stuck in the middle. His brain tells him that his club is just not good enough to make the playoffs this year while his heart keeps creating scenarios in which somehow they sneak in. Hey Adrian Beltre is due off the DL on Tuesday and Erik Bedard the week after that, and now the Mariners have the sure-handed Jack Wilson at shortstop. So maybe, just maybe Seattle could make up either the 7 1-2 games it is out in the West or the 5 1-2 in the wild card.

--The Tigers are amazingly in first place and adding payroll with Jarrod Washburn. It really shows the commitment of Detroit owner Mike Illitch. Detroit essentially has $71 million in dead money being spent this year on Magglio Ordonez, Gary Sheffield, Jeremy Bonderman, Carlos Guillen, Dontrelle Willis and Nate Robertson.--More amazing Tiger stuff: Their three most expensive starters in Bonderman, Willis and Robertson are doing nothing, but with the addition of Washburn they actually now have three of the top seven pitchers in AL ERA: 2d (Edwin Jackson, 2.59), 3d (Washburn, 2.64 ) and 7th (Justin Verlander, 3.16) in ERA.--Detroit was out looking for bullpen, too. A workhorse such as Washburn helps protect the pen to some degree.--This signals that the Mariners are all but conceding a playoff chance. Their GM Jack Zduriencik told me it would take an "extraordinary" run to make the postseason. Interesting that he took on Jack Wilson and his salary, though. Also, Adrian Beltre is due off the DL on Tuesday. Will he get through waivers and be a pick up by some team in August?--The Twins are still trying to obtain Orlando Carbera. One person in the know put it at 50-50.-- Marco Scutaro projects as Type-A fr.agt so the Blue Jays are asking for a good piece back, and don't expect Scott Rolen to be moved at all.

Beltre nearing return to Seattle

Adrian Beltre is progressing well in his recovery from left shoulder surgery, and believes he will return to the Mariners in two weeks, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Beltre has built up a rep of playing hurt in Seattle, and feels like he can play right now. He will hit off a tee Saturday, and will likely go on a rehab assignment to get some at-bats before returning.

Ryan Divish, of The Tacoma News Tribune, reports Seattle Mariners 3B Adrian Beltre (shoulder) rejoined the team Thursday, July 16, and played catch. However, he is not close to returning to action and it is still difficult for him to raise his arm. Beltre's shoulder has progressed to the point where he hopes to take groundballs by next week and begin swinging a bat in two weeks. He is not expected to return until mid August.

According to MLB.com, injured Mariners' third baseman Adrian Beltre is expected to rejoin the team during their three-game series in Detroit on July 21. Beltre will then return with the team to Seattle to continue his rehab from shoulder surgery.

Our View: Beltre is still expected to miss five more weeks, but it sounds like the rehab is going well. When he does return, it seems likely that he won't have nearly as much pop in his bat as he did before the injury, so his fantasy value will be slim at best. Don't expect a miraculous return to dominance for Beltre this season.
