"It's a difficult thing and I feel bad about it," Zduriencik told the early arriving reporters. Confirming previous reports, Seattle Mariners 3B Adrian Beltre (thumb/shoulder) will not play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, because he has not fully recovered from surgeries last fall on his left thumb and left shoulder, according to The Associated Press. In his first exhibition game Friday, Feb. 27, Beltre went 2-for-3, with three RBIs, as the designated hitter. He considered himself healthy enough to play in the WBC, and had planned to leave camp Monday, March 1 to join the Dominican Republic team for training. However, general manager Jack Zduriencik took the decision to participate away from Beltre. "We need this player, and we need this player badly, to be competitive this year," he said. "I feel bad about it. I know how badly he wanted to play. As I said all along, I would support him - as long as he was healthy ... if he's not right at 100 percent, then we as an organization couldn't afford to have a setback."

"I don't want him to jeopardize anything," Wakamatsu said. "He seems to feel he can't judge that unless he gets in there (in a game). He feels he's farther along that we've anticipated." Beltre is also getting treatment on his achy shoulder. "Since they told me they didn't want me to play I don't want to go over there and get hurt and hear, 'I told you so,'" Beltre said. The commissioner's office and the players' association, the joint organizers of the WBC, recently compiled a list of major leaguers who had offseason surgery and hadn't yet returned to action -- by playing winter ball, for example.
