Wainwright won for the third time in four September starts. His last two, including a no-decision on Sept. 20, have been especially impressive considering he's rocking a 21/3 K/BB ratio in 15 innings. Saturday's slotted him in at 204 strikeouts, the first time in three years as a starter that he's surpassed the 200-strikeout mark. He'll go for his 20th win on Oct. 2 when he takes on the Brewers at Busch Stadium.

He escaped an eighth-inning jam by striking out Clint Barmes and pinch-hitter Jason Giambi, both looking, to strand runners on first and second. "He might have won the [Cy Young] award in the eighth inning," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said of his right-hander who walked one and struck out 11 while throwing a career-high 130 pitches. Brad Hawpe went 2-for-3 and popped a two-run homer against Adam Wainwright in the Rockies 6-3 loss to the Cardinals on Saturday.

Our View: Hawpe was bumped to seventh in the order before the game due to his recent offensive struggles, but was the most productive bat for the Rockies in the game. Perhaps Jim Tracy's strategy worked. It was Hawpe's first homer since August 29th.

Adam Wainwright finally earned his league-leading 19th win of the season, and it coincided with the Cardinals first Central Division Championship since 2006. St. Louis clinched with a 6-3 win over the Rockies on Saturday.

Our View: Wainwright tossed eight dominant innings, allowing just two earned runs on ten hits and a walk, while fanning 11. He's now 19-8 on the season with a 2.58 ERA and is being considered the favorite for the NL Cy Young. Since July 1st he leads all pitchers in wins, ERA and innings pitched and is second in strikeouts.

B.J. Rains, of MLB.com, reports St. Louis Cardinals SP Kyle Lohse's (forearm) next start will be skipped Friday, Sept. 18, with SP John Smoltz (shoulder) making the start instead. SP Chris Carpenter will throw Saturday, Sept. 19, and SP Adam Wainwright will go Sunday, Sept. 20. The team plans to have Lohse pitch in one of the games against the Houston Astros on the first stop of their upcoming nine-game road trip. Carpenter is scheduled to receive an extra day of rest for each of his remaining regular-season starts.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright's contract has stipulations that vest options if he finishes in the top five in Cy Young voting, but not until next season. Wainwright is guaranteed $4.65 million next season and $6.5 million in 2011. There is a $9 million option for 2012 and a $12 million option for 2012 that would vest if Wainwright finishes in the top five in the award voting in 2010 or 2011. If Wainwright wins the Cy Young next season or in 2011, his base salary for 2012 increases from $9 million to $10 million. The club's option on Wainwright for 2013 is worth $12 million. He would receive a $250,000 bonus if he wins the award this year, $100,000 for second or third place and $50,000 for fourth or fifth place.

Our View: Uggla now has 29 homers and 78 RBI on the season. His .244 average is disappointing, but it's hard to argue with that power production from a second baseman.

Our View: Waino is now 18-8 with a 2.59 ERA and is still very much in the conversation for NL Cy Young, but it's going to be tough to wrestle it away from current favorite Tim Lincecum. 19 wins certainly would have helped.

Lohse, who had trouble finding a consistent release point on Saturday when he was cuffed around in his first start in three weeks, had an MRI Monday and some minor inflammation was found. Lohse was slated to pitch this weekend against the Cubs but probably will be skipped, with both Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright likely to face Chicago along with John Smoltz, who reported improvement in his right shoulder. Smoltz, who was skipped Monday because of recent tendinitis in the shoulder, said before the Cardinals beat Florida, "To beat a dead horse, I could have pitched today. Our View: Pineiro now has an eight-game winning streak and the Cardinals have won each of his last 11 starts. He has been a godsend for the Redbirds this season and is as good or better than any third starter in the game. He's deceptively waiting to strike behind co aces Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright.

Derrick Goold, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports in a pitching-staff meeting before the season called by pitching coach Dave Duncan, SP Chris Carpenter stressed that the pitching staff needed to be on the same page throughout the season. "Dunc pointed out the talent level that we have and that we shouldn't be satisfied too easily," said SP Adam Wainwright. "He went through the group and asked us what the goal of the staff should be. That's where Carp said, 'We're going to be on the same page from Day 1.' We're going to go out and watch sides. We're going to do things the way we used to do it. We're going to do things as a group." All of the starting pitchers watch each others' bullpen sessions, work out together, sit with each other on the plane and schedule team dinners. Each pitcher also borrows something from another's work ethic and preparation between starts.

He puts the seam of the baseball, right near the horseshoe, between his index finger and middle finger. SP Adam Wainwright has also adopted the pitch, throwing it about 30 percent of the time. Pineiro has 84 strikeouts and just 18 walks in 170 2/3 innings this year.
