15-game winner Jason Marquis could be left out of Colorado's postseason rotation should they win the National League wild card, according to Fox Sports.

Our View: Marquis is just 1-4 with a 5.48 ERA in his past seven starts, and has really faded since being named an All Star. As long as Aaron Cook stays healthy, there's a good chance he will be relegated to the bullpen for the postseason.

"In making the decision to start Aaron Cook, what goes into it is the fact that we'd have roughly 60-70 pitches available with Cookie," manager Jim Tracy said before Tuesday's first in a three-game set with the Padres. Cook was 10-6 with a 4.47 ERA in 25 starts before the injury.

News: Aaron Cook finally feels like he's part of a pennant race. Colorado's ace right-hander learned Tuesday that he'll return to the mound Friday night against St. Louis, his first start since going on the disabled list with a strained right elbow on Aug. 22. The Rockies entered their game Tuesday night against San Diego with a four-game lead over San Francisco in the NL wild-card race. Cook was an onlooker the last time the Rockies reached the playoffs, missing out on their incredible 21-1 run-up to the World Series in 2007 because of a strained side muscle that sidelined him for 11 weeks. He returned for Game 4 of the World Series, allowing three runs over six stellar innings but couldn't prevent Boston from sweeping the Rockies for the title. "Yeah, '07 was a totally different story. When I got hurt, I knew I was going to be gone for at least 60 days and we weren't even really in it when I got hurt," Cook said. "So, to be in a pennant run, to get hurt when I got hurt, this year stunk. I wasn't really concerned about starting. I just wanted to come back and help and be part of the team." [...]

Our View: Cook has been rehabbing a shoulder strain for the last month, but fared well in a 50-pitch simulated game on Saturday and the Rockies think he's ready. He'll be on a limited pitch count (around 70), so he likely won't be able to go deep into the game, but the Rox have to be happy he's trotting back out to the hill. Before the injury he was 10-6 with a 4.47 ERA.

News: From The Sports Xchange: Aaron Cook, sidelined since Aug. 22 with shoulder soreness, threw a 25-pitch side session Sunday at Petco Park. Manager Jim Tracy said Cook will go to the Rockies' instructional league program in Tucson, Ariz., which begins Sept. 20, and face hitters there with no plan to have Cook return during the regular season, which runs through Oct. 4. Cook will throw to hitters in a simulated game Tuesday at AT&T Park for the first time since he came out of a start in the fourth inning Aug. 21 with shoulder soreness. If Cook doesn't return to pitch during the regular season, he would be in jeopardy of being left off the postseason roster in the first round, unless the Rockies opt to include him as a long reliever. The Rockies have set their rotation the rest of the regular season, and it includes an opening Sept. 25 against the Cardinals at Coors Field. That date could be an opportunity for Cook or Jose A. Contreras (right quadriceps strain) to be part of a postseason rotation that is set up to include Ubaldo Jimenez, Jason Marquis and Jorge De La Rosa in a five-game division series. [...]

Troy E. Renck, of The Denver Post, reports Colorado Rockies SP Aaron Cook (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch side session Sunday, Sept. 13, and still thinks he can return to pitch again this year. "That's my goal," said Cook. "I understand they are trying to be cautious, but I believe I will be in a big league game based on how I feel right now." He is scheduled to throw to hitters Tuesday, Sept. 15.

According to the Denver Post, Rockies' starting pitcher Aaron Cook is still hopeful he will be able to pitch for the team this season. Cook threw a 25-pitch side session on Sunday, but the team isn;t planning on him being available again this year.

Our View: Cook has been out since August 22 with a right shoulder strain, and time is running out for him to make a return to the team. Even if he were able to come back in the last week or so of the season, it seems unlikely the team would add him to the playoff roster. Unless his recovery miraculously speeds up in the next few weeks, it looks like Cook is done for 2009.
