Phils make Rivera work, rough night for Manuel
1. Unless you were Jimmy Rollins, you had to believe that this World Series was going to be a long one, as closely matched as are the Yankees and Phillies. So while Philadelphia lost Game 2, 3-1, to a stellar pitching effort by Yankees starter A.J. Burnett, they scored a small triumph that may pay dividends as the series is extended: they chipped away at the seemingly indestructible nature of Mariano Rivera.

1. The narrative has changed for New York Game 2 starter A.J. Burnett. Burnett can't close out the ALCS
News: Yankees SP A.J. Burnett got off to a shaky start in his third playoff game Thursday, and his final inning wasn't pretty either. The postseason rookie failed to deliver a closeout victory for the Yankees in the American League championship series. Burnett got torched for four runs in the first inning of Game 5 at the Angels and couldn't hold a Yankees lead when he started the seventh. The Angels rallied for a 7-6 win to cut New York's ALCS lead to 3-2, with the series shifting back to the East Coast for Saturday's Game 6. In all, Burnett allowed six runs on eight hits in six innings, issuing three walks and recording three strikeouts. He didn't factor in the decision. [...]

Burnett hammered early in Yanks' loss
A.J. Burnett received a rude welcoming from the Angels on Thursday, as quickly fell behind 4-0 in the first inning. Burnett settled down after the first, and ended up finishing with a line of six innings pitched, six runs, eight hits, three walks, and three strikeouts.
Our View: Burnett looked like he might not make it out of the first, but he settled in and shut the Angels down until the seventh. He took a no-decision in the contest, but the Yankees fell in the game by a score of 7-6. Burnett will need to be much better the next time out, because he was not sharp tonight.

The Hartford Courant reports a decision is still being made whether to have New York Yankees C Jose Molina catch during Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, since the Yankees are pitching SP A.J. Sabathia dominates in Game 5
CC Sabathia only surrendered one earned run on five hits over eight innings in Tuesday's 10-1 win at the Angels in Game 4 of the ALCS. He had two walks with five strikeouts.

Kendrick won't start Game 5
Howie Kendrick won't start Game 5 of the ALCS against the Yankees, according to the Orange County Register.

Yankees | Burnett lasts over six innings in ALCS start
The Hartford Courant reports New York Yankees SP A.J. Burnett lasted 6 1/3 innings and allowed just two runs in his start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim during Game 2 of the American League Championship Series.
Burnett has quality effort in Game 2
A.J. Burnett was sharp in his Game 2 start on Saturday, but he didn't have nearly enough gas in the tank to go the distance in this one. The Yankees eventually won 4-3 in 13 innings to take 2-0 series lead.
Our View: Burnett lasted 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on just three hits and a pair of walks in his outing. He fanned four and kept the game close for the Yanks to win it on a fluke play in the bottom of the 13th inning. An errant throw scored Jerry Hairston Jr. from second with one out and the Big Apple erupted.
A.J. Burnett limited the Angels to two earned runs on three
A.J. Burnett limited the Angels to two earned runs on three hits Friday as the Yankees captured Game 2 of the ALCS by a score of 4-3 Burnett had plenty of control issues, but did a good job pounding the Angels' lineup with inside fastballs on a cold, rainy day in the Bronx. [...]

Our View: Izturis platoons with Howie Kendrick at second, and with right-hander A.J. Burnett on the mound he gets the call. He's hitting seventh tonight and Kendrick, who had one of the Angels four hits in Game 1, will return to the lineup for Game 3 against Andy Pettitte.
Playoff pitching one for the books

Matsui to start at DH in Game 2
MLB.com reports that Hideki Matsui will start at DH against the Angels in Game 2 of the ALCS on Saturday.
Our View: Matsui gets the call over Jorge Posada, who was bumped from the lineup for Jose Molina. Molina apparently fits like a glove with A.J. Burnett (on the mound tonight), so he gets the start and Joe Girardi went with DH experience in Matsui.
Molina to start Game 2
MLB.com reports that catcher Jose Molina will get the start behind the plate for Game 2 of the ALCS.
Our View: A.J. Burnett will be on the mound and he has been partial to Molina this season. The same situation occurred in the ALDS against the Twins, and Jorge Posada was more that a little put off. Looks like Burnett is specifically requesting Molina. No word on Posada's feelings this time around.
VIDEO: Rosenthal chats with Burnett
Heading into Game 2 of the ALCS, A.J. Burnett opens up on his relationship with Jorge Posada in a chat with Ken Rosenthal.
Posada not catching tonight
Jose Molina will "definitely" catch A.J. Burnett in game two of the ALCS on Saturday, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.
Our View: Somewhere Jorge Posada fumes. Beyond taking Posada's bat out of the lineup and appeasing Burnett, this also means the Angels might not be able to run all over the base-paths tonight.
Followin’ CC’s lead

Sabathia dominates in Game 1
CC Sabathia only allowed one earned runs on four hits over eight innings in Friday's 4-1 win over the Angels in Game 1 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium. He had one walk and fired seven strikeouts.

Yankees | Molina likely to catch Burnett in Game 2
George A. King III, of the New York Post, reports New York Yankees C Jose Molina is likely to catch SP A.J. Burnett to start Game 2
Pete Abraham reports via Twitter that A.J. Burnett will start Game 2 of the ALCS.
Our View: CC Sabathia will get the ball in Game 1, followed by Burnett and then Andy Pettitte. The hard-throwing righty has allowed six runs in 12.2 innings against the Angels this season for a 1-0 record. Not the glossiest of numbers, but he was very good in his ALDS start against the Twins.

Peter Abraham, of The Boston Globe, reports New York Yankees SP A.J. Burnett will start Game 2 of the ALCS against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and SP Andy Pettitte will go in Game 3. SP CC Sabathia will start on short rest in Game 4 or SP Chad Gaudin will get the call.

Yankees | Burnett says personal catcher was not his call
ESPN.com reports New York Yankees SP A.J. Burnett said the decision to have C Jose Molina catch him in Game 2 of the Division Series was not his call. Burnett made it clear that the decision came from manager Joe Girardi. "It was the manager's decision, I had no part in it," Burnett said. "I've thrown good to both (catchers). My good games, I'm right. My bad games, it's not the catcher, it's me ... When I'm good, it doesn't matter which one is behind the plate." Burnett went 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA in his final six starts of the year with Molina behind the dish.
Burnett denying he requested Molina
The New York Post is reporting that Yankees' Game 2 starter A.J. Burnett is denying a report that he requested Jose Molina catch him instead of starter Jorge Posada. "It's something that Skip made the decision on and I had no part in," Burnett said on Wednesday.
Our View: It has been no secret that Posada is not happy about sitting in Game 2, and early reports indicated that Burnett had asked manager Joe Girardi to make Molina his personal catcher. Regardless of who made the request, Molina will be catching Burnett while Posada watches from the bench.
Burnett: Doesn’t matter who is behind plate

Posada to be out of the lineup when Burnett pitches
Jorge Posada will not catch pitcher A.J. Burnett during the playoffs, according to Newsday.

Hideki Matsui is still expected to DH on days that Burnett is pitching, however, meaning Posada and his .285 average will be out of the lineup.

He offset his mediocre pitching averages -- a 4.04 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP -- with 195 strikeouts, good for an 8.5 K/9 rate.
